2005 FIRST HALP YEAR PATENT ANALYSIS: IN KOREA, JAPAN, AND THE U.S.

OLED industry is meeting its turning point by its commercialization and technology in 2005. The effort of associated enterprises made possible to raise the large OLED development possibility and the mass production plan, and many possible technological problems were proposed to open these markets. In ‘2005 first half year OLED patent analysis’ report, it is to understand the first half year’s open/registered Rep. of Korea, Japan, and the United States applied results by analyzing the investigation to inquire current OLED technology trend.

OLED is a new technology with short history that the first inventors are still working on its development. It is an area that technology license is very susceptible with high expectations on the appearance of new technology. OLED enterprises are exerting on OLED research development to obtain prior market share for future OLED market as well as protecting their technology applying the patent.

Lots of new patents were displayed and registered during the first half year in 2005. In 2005, total of 2,357 patents were from Rep. of Korea, Japan, and the United States which showed an increase of 300 patents from 2004. Registered patents were 608 which are 170 more than in 2004. Within these patents, 215 were from Rep. of Korea that is 2.3 times higher than patents from second half year in 2004.

Not only the amount of patents was increased, but there were also improvements in the contents. A displayed/registered PE associated patents had 48% and 47% showing their maximum share and EM and PC followed the PE. In addition, patents of white OLED of front emission and both side emission of light method were increased as organic materials and OLED structure/working method were placed as main source of development. Also, OLED applied backlight lighting patents is started being applied.

As OLED newly entered the market, a technological solution plans and technology developments lead a intense competition This report provides OLED’S technology level as to be used a director for their research developments.
