Automotive Display OLED Panel, Expected to be Applied from 2018, Lifetime a Key Issue

Following mobile device and TV, OLED panel is expected to be actively applied to automotive display.

In CES 2017, it was clearly shown that flexible OLED is established as the key product for automotive display in pre-event Chrysler Conference. (Ref: http://www.olednet.com/ces2017-media-day-automotive-chrysler-potal/ )

According to Automotive Display Report – Application, Market Trend Analysis and the Market Forecast, published by UBI Research, OLED panel is expected to be actively applied to vehicle’s cluster or CID. Based on the superior picture quality and flexibility, the Report estimated it will first be applied to premium vehicles.

Automobile companies are attempting to differentiate themselves through environmentally friendly, connected, smart, and autonomous driving concepts. As such vehicle interior interface is also changing. Particularly, as connected, smart, and driver-less vehicles are advancing, diverse information has to be relayed and processed, and existing analogue method has limitations. Therefore, display’s function in automotive is becoming more important, and display sector is gradually expanding. In particular, cluster and CID have many curves and there is difficulty in large area rectangular shaped display application. As such, flexible display’s importance is being emphasized.

AMOLED panel, based on fast response speed, wide viewing angle, and high color gamut and contrast ratio, can provide high legibility for the driver. As flexible is easier, it can be applied to any area within a vehicle. Due to these advantages automobile companies are showing much interest, and co-development is being carried out with key panel companies.

However, lifetime still falls short for AMOLED panel to be applied to automotive. The Report analyzes that AMOLED panel lifetime to be approx. 50% of the automotive display requirements and considers lifetime to be the biggest issue.

The Report estimated the automotive display market to grow at approx. 17% CAGR until 2022 and record approx. US$ 25,000 million, and of this AMOLED panel market is expected to occupy approx. 20%.
