RELATED PATENT ANALYSIS FOR THE FIRST HALF OF 2006: KOREA/U.S/JAPAN

Trade between countries is getting larger in scale every year. Especially advanced transportation and communication means made fast exchange of industrial information and technology possible, hence easy imitation and use overseas. Therefore protecting self-developed technology is very important and it should be done by patent.

Recent rapid growth of display industry raises the importance of patent value more than ever. Especially OLED business is one of the display industries led by Korean manufacturers; researches and preparation for possible patent and royalty disputes are needed.
This report provides a quantitative/qualitative analysis of public/registered patents by country, applicant, and nationality of applicant of the first half of 2006.

There were 2,651 cases of public patent and 1,027 of registered patent in the first half of 2006; the number of public patent is increasing and that of registered patent is close to last year’s.
In public patent, 45.30% was from Japan and 40.06% was from Korea, which indicates significant reduction of gap between two countries compared to previous year; in registered patent, 39.34% was from Japan and 45.18% was from Korea, which indicates Korean patents outran Japanese.
This report conducted quantitative analysis on public and registered patents from Korea, US and Japan by country, applicant, and nationality of applicant and added qualitative analysis by OLEDNET classification code; it will be an important source to identify OLED related patent trend.
